About the NDA

Promoting oral health equity among people of color

The history of the National Dental Association (founded in 1913) and its precursor, the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society (founded in 1900) is one of relentless advocacy for human rights and social justice. It stands alone in its stewardship of oral health for disenfranchised descendants of slaves and the traditionally neglected. At this moment of reckoning, while some have been awakened to the atrocities of racism; others have been reawakened to harsh realities of its impact on health. The health and healing of this nation depend on the admission, not denial, of the deep wounds of slavery and its lingering impact. The challenge is to resist the urge to assimilate into a society that diminishes the value of humanity. The charge is to be steadfast in the commitment to achieve health equity for everyone. The goal is to increase the number of African American health and oral health professionals committed to serving populations that need them most.

Your generous support will be deeply appreciated.

Today's students are the hope for tomorrow.

THE 100TH PRESIDENT OF THE NDA

About
Dr. Nicole Cheek

Leader in advocacy, diversity, and healthcare equity

We are thrilled to announce the Inauguration Gala of the 100th President of the National Dental Association, Dr. Nicole Cheek. This momentous occasion not only celebrates NDA's remarkable achievements but also serves as an occasion to raise awareness and funds for our vital, award-winning community programs and Student National Dental Association scholarships.

Since 1913, the National Dental Association (NDA) has stayed true to our its mission to promote oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of our members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color, and raising the profile of the profession in our communities.

3.8% is our Call to Action. In the U.S., 3.8% of dentists identify as African-American or Black, despite comprising 13% of the total U.S. population. Racial concordance or shared racial identity between patients and medical providers has a direct correlation to improved patient outcomes. The population-to-dentist ratio for African-Americans has remained virtually unchanged for more than two decades. Your support will make a significant impact in creating a more ethnically diverse oral health workforce and improving the health of our communities.

Commitment to our students and to our community is woven into the fabric of the NDA and is part of our rich cultural heritage. Scholarships for dental students and funding for our community programs are vital for a healthy nation. Your generous donation will enable us to provide programs, scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and resources that will shape the future of dentistry and promote inclusivity within health care. With your support, our communities will be healthier and our students will thrive. We not only ask for your support for our mission, but we sincerely hope you will join us at this remarkable event to enjoy A Night to Remember!

If you are unable to attend the Inauguration Gala, we would greatly appreciate any contribution you can make to this worthy cause. Your support will make a significant impact, helping to create a more diverse and inclusive dental community and healthcare workforce.
Every contribution, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated and will be acknowledged during the event.

Thank you for considering our request. Together, let's make a difference. We greatly appreciate your support and hope to see you at the Gala!
